In this workshop, we will experience drawing in a multi-layered way. The motto will be to leave familiar paths and try out unusual ways of drawing through suggested exercises. We will draw inspiration from the practice of both historical and contemporary artists, take up their impulses and develop them in our own way.
For example, we will draw with unconventional tools such as an extension of our bodies and unfamiliar materials such as ropes. A ball covered in pigment is rolled, bounced or thrown on paper, creating an image of the movement. Collectively, we will create a drawing on paper with other course participants. Like a seismograph, we will react to our surroundings with a pencil in our trouser or jacket pocket during a walk. As we explore the space, we will draw traces with our bodies, which other participants will record in drawings.
We will start the workshop by working on paper and will increasingly open up to three-dimensionality. We will support the latter with simple exercises from performance work.
Each day will begin with a short, inspiring input, accompanied by artist portraits. This will be followed by guided exercises and then free space for individual experimentation and, if necessary, integration into personal graphic expression.
The course sharpens the eye for one’s own artistic practice of drawing, makes it possible to get to know new qualities or to find one’s own way into drawing.
When the body becomes the instrument and ropes become lines….
